1. What’s the weather like in Almeria?

2. How do I get around Almeria?

One option is to travel by train especially if you wish to take your trip at night. Spain’s railway system has improved quite dramatically in the last 10 years, and visitors can expect clean and comfortable seating and a relatively reliable train schedule. If you want to travel by day, take the bus. Larger groups may save money by renting a car.

3. Who were the Moors?

The Moors refer to an Islamic civilization from North Africa, who conquered Portugal and Spain from 711 to 1500. Considered to be “benevolent invaders” they blended their own culture with that of the locals, even allowing them to continue making wine and other items forbidden by Islam. They were eventually driven away by crusaders, though their cultural influence can still be seen in Almerian architecture and crafts.

4. What should I bring to Almeria?

Pack light clothing, comfortable walking shoes, hat and sunscreen, traveler’s checks, and a money belt for your valuables. Film is expensive so bring your own or use a digital camera.

5. Is Almeria safe?

Yes, but tourists should watch out for pick pocketers especially in tourist districts. Most thieves will work in groups, with someone creating a distraction while the other helps himself to your bag. Bringing a money belt helps, and never put your money in one place. If you are traveling in groups, divide the money among yourselves.
